Brief Intro
I'm Maia :) I'm an academic in a rather esoteric field who enjoys shiny asian pop bands when I'm not locked in basements with ancient manuscripts or dancing <3 I write fic on trains to fill my time and I really just like writing for fun ^^ It's one of my escapes.
What fandoms have you written in?
I've written in JE, EXO and BIGBANG in English, and I wrote under another name in another language a long time ago ^^.
Do the number of reviews tell how good a story is? Do reviews affect how you write in any way?
hmmm. the number of reviews in general just mean that more people have read the story? i read a lot of great things with fewer reviews, and i don't necessarily think they are better or worse than stories with many reviews? there seems to be a sort of... name recognition that has people reading stories by certain authors more often, and it doesn't necessarily mean that author is better-- it does usually mean that that author has written things that were well liked in the past, and with SO MUCH FIC for this fandom, it's easier to just click on a name you think will be consistent.
I myself have so little free time to read that I just read what's recced to me by my friends or by authors i consistently love, and sometimes i'm a little sad at the things i must be missing by not regularly clicking on things on a whim like i did when I had more time.
As for affecting how I write... not really. I'm a genre-jumper, and I get bored easily, so I like to skip between short and long and super fluffy and angsty and etc. Sometimes I want to write something pretty and sometimes funny, and I try not to pay attention to what people like more because I write for a lot of reasons, but it's always to make myself happy first, and other people happy second.
Do you use a beta?
So I usually have someone look things over for me unless it's a surprise. Sometimes I'll post and then later go back and make grammaticial corrections or spelling corrections when my friends point them out. I try to have things beta'd but sometimes different people will do different chunks of story because I always feel guilty asking someone to read something I wrote with any sort of attentiveness. It feels demanding and so :(. I'm working on that, among other things. Sometimes betas save me from making tremendous blunders though. I'm also very anxious about English at times, especially because nuances vary even between cultures-- for example, if I say she's 'quite pretty' I'm not giving her a compliment, but American English tends to think I am, haha, because the word 'quite' has a different meaning in American English.
What warnings have you used on your fiction?
I warn for graphic violent imagery, and for sexual kinks that are considered outside the realm of 'vanilla'. I don't really write things that need much warning, but if I do think something might be triggering I always try to warn for it because I'm a little sensitive myself ;; There's an argument to be made that "books in real life don't get warnings" but I always thoroughly research books that might be triggering before i read them so that argument doesn't really apply to me.
Have you ever stolen something from another person's work?
Not intentionally? I'm an academic so I really try to avoid taking from others because I've been the victim of this in my life and it feels terrible. However, I have realized that sometimes I stylistically adapt to things I like; I went through a Murakami phase where everything I wrote was stylistically sharp like that, but obviously not as good because I am not Murakami. Those phases don't tend to last long, because I rediscover my own voice, but, well, it happens. I don't know if that's so much stealing as emulating.
Favorite fandom to write/read?
I tend not to read in fandoms i write in. Right now, I like writing in EXO because I'm obsessed with EXO. But reading... lately I've been reading Teen Wolf fanfiction and Naruto fanfiction, haha. I love Hikaru no Go fanfiction a lot, too.
Favorite pairing?
Not really? In JE fandom, I was really big on Akame and Pin, but I've sort of faded into liking just about anything well written. In EXO, it's IMPOSSIBLE to like one pairing. I'll admit a fondness for SeKai... >.> And G-Ri!
Do you tend to write the same pairings/characters?
Err, some pop up more than others but I'm really into writing new pairings, especially in EXO! In JE I wrote mostly Akame/Pin becausethe sheer amount of canon makes writing for new pairings an exhausting research project, and in BIGBANG I write only G-Ri. But EXO is a whole new ballgame?
Favorite writer/writers?
I'd rather not answer this question? I tend to like different authors for different qualities, and I wouldn't want to leave anyone out ;;
What is your most popular fanfic and why do you think people find it so?
My most popular fic is either 'Across a Bridge of Magpies' or 'Satellite Hearts' for JE. They're both stories that are written from a very personal place, and I think people can tell. 'Push and Pull' for BIGBANG was also really popular, possibly for similar reasons, but the fandoms I write in are different sizes? So it's hard to say what's most popular.
Forget most people, what's the fanfic you've written you're most proud of?
'Unbound', which is my epic 73k adventure novel :) Which is both canon and a fantasy. I'm proud of that fic for so many reasons, and I just love it. I really like 'Universal Languages', which is also a fic with a lot of 'me' in it, although I'm sometimes super hesitant to put a lot of 'me' into EXO fic because I'm really sensitive and thin-skinned as a person and seeing people tear something apart when it's so much of you is really painful, haha, so I tread lightly here. And I guess Satellite Hearts, because that fic is just... a lot of Maia.
Do you find writing easy? Hard? What are the most difficult aspects of writing you struggle with?
Writing is easy. Writing something that MEANS something is hard. Writing something personal is hard. I always write about things that are connected to me in some way. Writing about ballet, or going to China with nothing, or backpacking through a foreign country, or falling in love and not knowing what to do about it... these are things I know, but it's only when I put my own feelings into it that it hurts. Posting fic is harder than writing it. I can't bring myself to crosspost anymore, although I'm working on it, because I do write fic in part to share it, so being afraid to put myself out there is stupid of me. I'll crosspost the next thing, I promise ;___;
Pairings you avoid?
I will read the best of anything. I am the same with music and art and books, etc, so it doesn't make sense to be different with fic :) It took me a while to get there, though, haha.
Are there any fanfiction trends/cliches you can't stand or are just sick of?
Eating disorders. It's not that I hate that people write about them, or think it's wrong to write about them, or even that people shouldn't; but having suffered through one myself, I find it horrible to read about, especially when it's portrayed as a postive/glamorous thing. And that's very personal to me, and not some rule I think fandom should follow or anything, because it's obviously my problem and not fandom's. But I would ask if people do write about them, please, PLEASE warn because it's very hard for me, and probably other people too, to read considering my own background.
Are you guilty of any of the fanfiction trends/cliches you now hate? Or any other ones?
A lot of people are tired of university aus and I definitely wrote one.
When you write, is there anything that helps? Music? Quiet room?
I make playlists for every fic. I used to upload them but I've stopped because my mediafire got deleted. sigh. I write best on trains.
Lastly, how would you sum up your fanfiction experience and yourself as a writer?
A mixed bag of experiences. I've met a lot of great people through fanfiction. I've encountered a lot of great things. But it's also shown me a lot of the ugly side of people when they have the distance of the internet to keep them from seeing how words can affect people. :/ A lot of my friends have been hurt really terribly by people they don't even know. But in general, to focus on the positives, it's given me an outlet for all the extra words I have! And it's given me the chance to share a bit of myself with people I'll never meet and never know and that makes me so so so happy. Me as a writer? I'm a complete amateur at fiction, but I'm trying, and I'm learning, and I'm hopefully improving :) and I just want people to finish the things I write with a smile because happy endings are often harder to come by in real life. So if I can make someone smile, it was worth it :) I know I'm not a great writer yet, but I hope I will be someday, so I can share ideas with even more people <3
and I guess... if you have anything you've ever been dying to know about me, here's the chance to ask? not that you have to want to know anything about me, haha, but if you're curious :3
