OMG I wish I was ambitious enough to write a ballet!AU! Bu yay for other people being obsessed with the fact that Kai did ballet! I thought someone else would beat me to the punch on all of this stuff, considering how much I tried to make myself not write this, but <3 <3 <3 for shared kinks.
I am fascinated by Kai. There's something about him that reminds me of Japanese pop idols, who are so fractured in so many visible ways. Usually with Kpop you don't see that divide until they've been around much longer, and... basically, yeah, you pinpointed it exactly. "When did he practice these things?" I just wanted to play around with it, a lot.
And ballet... in a lot of ways it's the point(e). As someone who did ballet for a long time before ballroom, I knew I had to be careful not to alienate non-dancers, but at the same time in my head there are these images about how Kai might have felt, about ballet. Boys were always so outnumbered, and it's an obvious point of ridicule in childhood, to choose dance over taekwondo and soccer and all sorts of other modern 'manly' extracurriculars. Especially in Korea, where they dress boys up as girls and tell them they're pretty BUT YOU'D BETTER BE AS MANLY AS POSSIBLE OKAY. So I thought it might be that he just... Loved it. Like I loved it. And yeah, tl;dr, I think it's impossible not to love ballet, just a little, if you pursue it on your own.
Go watch ballet! I constantly encourage this! Go go go! :D

p.p.s.: So actually I think three scenes in this are qualifying for the kink square.
